Research dated 2026-09-12: Waste Management is an integrated waste network, not merely a company that empties bins. Collection brings residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal material into transfer, recovery, landfill, and energy assets, allowing WM to sell handling and disposal capacity as well as pickup. Integration-led cost gains are lifting profitability and cash generation; their durability matters because substantial debt leaves less room if operating improvement fades.

1 · What is it?

What is Waste Management (WM), and what does it report?

Short answer · as of

Customers pay WM to collect waste and recyclables and move them to transfer stations, recovery facilities, or disposal sites.

Research dated 2026-09-12.

Customers pay WM to collect waste and recyclables and move them to transfer stations, recovery facilities, or disposal sites. The company also processes recyclable materials, brokers recovered commodities, converts landfill gas into energy, handles combustion residue, performs remediation work, and provides specialized waste services for industrial and oilfield customers.

Reported revenue therefore blends different points along the material flow. Commercial collection is the largest disclosed stream, while industrial, residential, other collection, and landfill operations each contribute meaningfully; the top line measures service mix and downstream throughput rather than pickup volume alone.

2 · Latest results

What do the latest results show for Waste Management (WM)?

Short answer · as of

The most recent reported quarter, Q2 FY2026, carried revenue of $6.68B.

Research dated 2026-09-12.

The latest reported period brought higher revenue, gross profit, operating income, net income, and diluted earnings than the preceding period. Yet revenue remained below consensus while reported earnings exceeded expectations, repeating the prior release’s split and showing that recent profit delivery has been stronger than the sales surprise.

The annual record carries a similar tension: revenue advanced in the latest year while net income slipped. Management credits companywide cost control and integration synergies, particularly within Healthcare Solutions, and expects margin expansion and free cash flow growth to continue. That explanation is supported by stronger recent operating cash flow, but it remains a claim to test against future operating results.

3 · Financial strengths and risks

What are the financial strengths and risks for Waste Management (WM)?

Short answer

Cash and short-term investments were $557.00M at the Jun 30, 2026 balance-sheet date. Operating cash flow was $1.73B for the quarter ended Jun 30, 2026, meaning operations generated cash. These figures do not establish a cash runway.

Research dated 2026-09-12.

WM produces substantial operating cash, and the latest period paired stronger cash generation with lower capital spending. The capital program nevertheless remains large, reflecting a model built around collection fleets and owned processing, transfer, landfill, and energy infrastructure.

Cash and short-term investments rebounded sharply, but the closing balance remains below the opening level of the reported window and small beside total debt. Including long-term investments improves the liquidity picture without changing the debt-heavy position; current-liquidity ratios also remain below parity. A favorable operating-quality screen does not remove that constraint.

The business-specific failure path is weaker operating cash flow while infrastructure spending stays elevated. Under that combination, debt would compete more directly with reinvestment, and the integrated network’s asset requirements would become a burden rather than an advantage.

4 · What to check next?

What should you watch next at Waste Management (WM)?

Short answer · as of

The next earnings report is expected on Oct 26, 2026.

Research dated 2026-09-12.

Consensus expects another advance in revenue and earnings at the upcoming release. Watch whether revenue clears expectations after repeated misses, whether earnings strength arrives with sales delivery, and whether longer-range growth expectations remain intact.

Management’s integration thesis should appear in lower selling and administrative intensity within Healthcare Solutions, continued margin expansion, and stronger operating cash flow. Because recent cash improvement coincided with easing capital spending, cleaner confirmation would come from cash generation before investment rather than from reduced spending alone. Sustained cash retention or debt reduction would also carry more weight than an isolated rise in the closing cash balance.

5 · Peer comparison

How does Waste Management compare with its peers?

Short answer

Waste Management's score ranks tied for 7th of 13 in the bounded comparison shown, against 12 same-model peers. These are company scores, not expected investment returns. The set lists named competitors first, then companies in the same data-provider industry classification closest in market value; that classification is the provider's, not our judgment of business similarity.

Research dated 2026-09-12.

Against a collection-only operator, WM owns more of the waste stream’s destination: transfer stations, recovery facilities, landfills, and landfill-gas energy plants. Material entering through collection can therefore support downstream processing, disposal, recycling, or energy activity within the same network.

That structure also separates WM from an asset-light recycling broker. Multiple operating stages broaden the revenue base, but they make asset productivity, capital discipline, and balance-sheet capacity especially important; segment mix shows whether commercial collection or landfill activity is carrying more of the economics.

Common Questions About WM (Industrials)

Research dated 2026-09-12; the answers below are from that research, and the full attribution is under Sources. The last 3 questions are answered from this page's own dated data, not from the research.

What does Waste Management sell beyond trash pickup?

WM sells transfer, sorting, recycling, disposal, landfill-gas energy, remediation, combustion-residue management, and specialized industrial services. Pickup feeds an infrastructure network whose economics extend beyond the collection route.

Sources (as of 2026-09-12): Business description; Revenue by segment

How does Healthcare Solutions affect Waste Management margins?

Healthcare Solutions is central to management’s integration and cost-control narrative. Management says its selling and administrative burden has improved substantially since acquisition and expects further progress to support companywide efficiency.

Sources (as of 2026-09-12): Management outlook — dated call excerpts; Quarterly income statement (USD thousands)

Why do Waste Management landfills matter to its business model?

Landfills are revenue-producing destinations within WM’s own network, not merely endpoints for collected waste. They add disposal economics and can support landfill-gas energy activity after material leaves the collection route.

Sources (as of 2026-09-12): Business description; Revenue by segment

Why can Waste Management earnings beat while revenue misses?

Recent releases paired revenue shortfalls against consensus with earnings above expectations. Management attributes the profitability support to cost discipline and integration synergies, making operating margin and cash generation the checks on whether that explanation continues to hold.

Sources (as of 2026-09-12): Reported versus estimated, last 8 quarters; Management outlook — dated call excerpts; Quarterly income statement (USD thousands); Operating cash flow by quarter (USD millions)

Fact-family notes

  1. Quarterly statement note. Source series as of 2026-06-30. USD. The operating result is the FMP-standardized value supplied by FMP; it may differ from a filing’s GAAP loss from operations when the provider classifies separately presented items differently. It is not net income or cash flow. Applies to Fact IDs: fin.q_table.depth.2026-06-30.revenue_k, fin.q_table.depth.2026-06-30.sga_k, fin.q_table.depth.2026-06-30.operating_result_k, fin.q_table.depth.2026-03-31.revenue_k, fin.q_table.depth.2026-03-31.sga_k, fin.q_table.depth.2026-03-31.operating_result_k, fin.q_table.depth.2025-12-31.revenue_k, fin.q_table.depth.2025-12-31.sga_k, fin.q_table.depth.2025-12-31.operating_result_k, fin.q_table.depth.2025-09-30.revenue_k, fin.q_table.depth.2025-09-30.sga_k, fin.q_table.depth.2025-09-30.operating_result_k.
  2. Earnings-history note. Source series as of 2026-07-28. Dates are report dates, not fiscal period ends. Revenue is in USD; EPS is USD per share, rounded to four decimals. The earnings feed does not establish a basic, diluted or adjusted basis. Earnings-feed EPS may differ from statement EPS; the two series are not combined. Applies to Fact IDs: earn.history.depth.2026-07-28.revenue_actual, earn.history.depth.2026-07-28.revenue_estimated, earn.history.depth.2026-07-28.revenue_actual.comparison, earn.history.depth.2026-07-28.eps_actual.comparison, earn.history.depth.2026-07-28.eps_actual, earn.history.depth.2026-07-28.eps_estimated, earn.history.depth.2026-04-28.revenue_actual, earn.history.depth.2026-04-28.revenue_estimated, earn.history.depth.2026-04-28.eps_actual, earn.history.depth.2026-04-28.eps_estimated, earn.history.depth.2026-01-28.revenue_actual, earn.history.depth.2026-01-28.revenue_estimated, earn.history.depth.2026-01-28.eps_actual, earn.history.depth.2026-01-28.eps_estimated, earn.history.depth.2025-10-27.revenue_actual, earn.history.depth.2025-10-27.revenue_estimated, earn.history.depth.2025-10-27.eps_actual, earn.history.depth.2025-10-27.eps_estimated.
  3. Cash-flow note. Source series as of 2026-06-30. USD. Negative operating cash flow means cash used. (WM) functions as a premier provider of environmental waste solutions across North America, serving a diverse client base that includes residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal customers. The company's core operations involve comprehensive collection services, which include gathering and transporting both waste materials and recyclables from their initial point of generation to designated transfer stations, material recovery facilities (MRFs), or final disposal sites.
