Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $127.58B on Oct. 28, 2026, just under the analyst estimate of $127.96B, and diluted EPS of $2.12 against an estimate of $3.02. Management tied the year-over-year decline in EPS to lower other income and expense, including an unrealized investment loss. The bigger concern is that free cash flow was negative $9.06B, the second straight negative quarter, as AI infrastructure spending, a TPU system inventory build and a $5.2B European Commission fine weighed on the cash the business generated. Figures are current as of Oct. 30, 2026 and cover the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2026 unless stated.

What happened
The operating business grew strongly. Operating income was $40.58B, up from $31.23B a year earlier, and operating margin (the share of revenue left after running costs) was 31.8% versus 30.5% a year earlier. So the year-over-year drop in earnings did not come from operating income.
The EPS decline came below the operating line. On the call, management said other income and expense was a loss of $8.2B due primarily to an unrealized (not yet sold) loss on its SpaceX investment, and that net income and EPS decreased due to that decline. Management did not discuss the gap to analyst estimates; any link between this loss and the miss versus estimates is our inference. Net income also compares against quarters that were unusually large: it was $62.58B in Q1 FY2026 and $112.19B in Q2 FY2026. FMP data does not break out why. Net income exceeded operating income in those quarters, which suggests non-operating items, though the evidence does not identify them. Treat the net income trend with caution.
Cloud was the standout. Google Cloud revenue was $30.71B, versus $15.16B a year earlier. Management said it rose 103%, driven by AI infrastructure, AI solutions and core cloud, with sales of TPU systems (Google's own AI chips) a meaningful contributor. Cloud operating margin rose to 36.2% from 23.7%, according to the call.
Search kept growing, but more slowly than in the prior quarter. Google Search & other revenue was $63.35B versus $56.57B a year earlier, up 12% per management. Management said query growth was the highest in five years, driven by its AI investments. In response to JPMorgan's Doug Anmuth, Philipp Schindler said currency was the largest driver of the slowdown from Q2 to Q3, along with some Asia-Pacific retail advertisers being affected by the EU eliminating its de minimis exemption, and a post-World Cup media normalization. He also said AI Mode queries earn less per query for now, though ads are scaling inside AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Other segments: YouTube ads were $11.21B (year-ago $10.26B), subscriptions, platforms and devices were $14.29B (year-ago $12.87B), and Google Network was $7.46B (year-ago $7.35B).
Why it matters for investors
Negative free cash flow is widening. The table shows free cash flow by quarter.
| Quarter | Operating cash flow | Capital expenditure | Free cash flow | |---|---|---|---| | Q3 FY2025 | $48.41B | $23.95B | $24.46B | | Q4 FY2025 | $52.40B | $27.85B | $24.55B | | Q1 FY2026 | $45.79B | $35.67B | $10.12B | | Q2 FY2026 | $39.07B | $44.92B | negative $5.86B | | Q3 FY2026 | $42.29B | $51.35B | negative $9.06B |
It shows spending rising every quarter while operating cash flow has stayed in a narrower band, so free cash flow turned negative in Q2 and fell further in Q3. AI infrastructure spending is not the only factor. Ashkenazi also cited the build-up of TPU system inventory and a $5.2B cash payment for a 2018 European Commission fine, which was larger than the quarter-over-quarter widening in the shortfall. Buybacks, which were $11.50B in Q3 FY2025 and $5.50B in Q4 FY2025, were $0.00 in each of the last three quarters. Dividends continued at $2.94B in the latest quarter, and the company declared a quarterly dividend of $0.22 per share, payable in December.
Ashkenazi said: "Our sizable investments in technical infrastructure and inventory build of TPU systems as we scale that business will put pressure on free cash flows." Full-year 2026 capex guidance of $195 billion to $205 billion is unchanged, and management said capex will "increase significantly in 2027."
Margins slipped from earlier in the year. Gross margin was 59.7% in Q3 FY2026, compared with 62.4% in Q1 and 61.6% in Q2. Operating margin was 31.8%, down from 36.1% in Q1 and 34.0% in Q2, though above the year-ago 30.5%. Management did not address the sequential decline. Its comments on costs were year-over-year: it cited hardware costs primarily related to TPU system sales, higher depreciation, content acquisition and technical infrastructure operations costs, and higher research and development spending driven by compensation, primarily for investment in AI talent.
Valuation versus peers. On trailing 12 months, GOOGL trades at a P/E (price divided by earnings) of 14.24, with net margin of 50.0%. Peers: Amazon has a P/E of 19.00 and net margin of 16.9%; Meta has 20.63 and 31.1%; Microsoft has 27.05 and 41.2%. Alphabet's low P/E and high margin may be flattered by non-operating items, since net income exceeded operating income in Q1 and Q2 FY2026, though the evidence does not identify them. Price to free cash flow is 171.00, which shows how thin cash generation has become. Price/sales is 7.17 and EV/EBITDA is 10.86.
Analysts remain positive. Of 83 ratings, 2 are strong buy, 69 buy, 11 hold and 1 sell, for a consensus of "Buy." The average analyst price target is $400.32 (median $400.00, range $325.00 to $485.00), well above the $277.26 latest quote. Citizens downgraded the stock to Market Perform on Oct. 29, 2026, while Morgan Stanley, Cantor Fitzgerald, Rosenblatt, Needham and Susquehanna kept positive ratings. Targets are analysts' views, not ours. For a very different reference, FMP's discounted cash flow model gives $99.16 per share, which is a model estimate.

What could go wrong
- Cash burn: Management expects pressure on free cash flow to continue, and capex is set to rise further in 2027.
- Commitments: The company disclosed $924B in future purchase commitments and $152B in leases and obligations not yet started. Management said these amounts reflect the maximum contractual obligations, and that a number of these agreements have variable pricing and volume flexibility, which could result in lower spend.
- Search: Management said it will lap (compare against) a strong prior-year acceleration, about 3 points in Q3 and "a couple of points" in Q4. A slightly larger currency headwind is also expected in Q4. No numeric Q4 revenue guidance was given. Whether AI agents could eventually pressure Search was raised on the call. Schindler called agentic experiences "clearly additive" and Pichai called them an "expansion opportunity," but neither quantified the impact.
- Cloud margins: Ashkenazi said the company started using third-party compute capacity at the end of Q3 and will ramp usage in Q4, given a supply constrained environment. She said, "We expect margin headwinds in the near term as we utilize this capacity."
- Other Bets: These units lost $2B at the operating level.
- Legal: A law firm has announced a securities class action alleging the company misled investors about delays to a Gemini model. These are allegations, not findings.
- Insiders: The recent Form 4 filings we reviewed showed 0 open-market purchases and 0 sales in the last 90 days.
What to watch next
- Fourth-quarter results, expected 2027-02-03: analysts estimate EPS of $3.21 and revenue of $142.31B.
- Capex details for 2027, which management said it would provide on the Q4 call.
- TPU system sales, where Pichai cited "strong demand" across many customers, and Ashkenazi said sales would continue to scale in Q4, "followed by a meaningful revenue ramp in 2027." Product-level financials have not been disclosed.
- Free cash flow and buybacks: whether free cash flow turns positive again and buybacks resume.
- Search growth as ads scale in AI Mode, and the Gemini app's agent rollout planned later this year.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Did Alphabet beat earnings estimates in the third quarter of 2026?
No. Alphabet reported diluted EPS of $2.12 for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2026, below the $3.02 estimate, and revenue of $127.58B, slightly below the $127.96B estimate. Management did not discuss the gap to estimates. It said net income and EPS decreased year over year due to the decline in other income and expense, which was negative $8.2B due primarily to an unrealized loss on its SpaceX investment.Q: Why is Alphabet's free cash flow negative?
Alphabet's free cash flow was negative $9.06B in the third quarter of 2026 because capital expenditure of $51.35B exceeded operating cash flow of $42.29B. The company said it is building TPU system inventory and data center capacity, and that a $5.2B European Commission fine was also paid in the quarter.Q: Is Alphabet stock cheap after the earnings report?
It depends on the measure, and this is not a recommendation. The trailing P/E of 14.24 is lower than Amazon, Meta and Microsoft, but net income exceeded operating income in recent quarters, which suggests non-operating items may have boosted it, though the evidence does not identify them. The price to free cash flow of 171.00 is high.
