What is Kinder Morgan (KMI), and what does it report?
Short answer · as of
Kinder Morgan is primarily an infrastructure operator, not a conventional producer whose results simply follow commodity prices. It earns across transportation, storage, gathering, processing, terminal handling, and related facilities; the carbon dioxide business also includes production and marketing activities, oil-field interests, and renewable and liquefied natural gas assets.
Research dated 2026-09-12.
Natural gas pipelines supply most segment revenue, while products pipelines, terminals, and carbon dioxide operations contribute distinct volume, utilization, and commodity exposures. Consolidated revenue therefore blends infrastructure activity with a smaller set of operations that reach beyond transportation and storage.
What do the latest results show for Kinder Morgan (KMI)?
Short answer · as of
The most recent reported quarter, Q2 FY2026, carried revenue of $4.48B.
Research dated 2026-09-12.
The latest period showed a sequential decline in revenue, operating profit, net income, and earnings per share, even as gross profit improved. Against the comparable prior period, however, revenue and each reported profit measure advanced, extending the broader improvement visible in the annual results.
Recent earnings have also cleared revenue and earnings expectations in successive reports. Management attributes the opportunity set to growing demand for new midstream infrastructure and says prospective projects are being supported by long-term contracts with creditworthy customers; that statement describes the expansion pipeline, not the cause of every movement in reported profit.

What are the financial strengths and risks for Kinder Morgan (KMI)?
Short answer
Cash and short-term investments were $89.00M at the Jun 30, 2026 balance-sheet date. Operating cash flow was $1.96B for the quarter ended Jun 30, 2026, meaning operations generated cash. These figures do not establish a cash runway.
Research dated 2026-09-12.
Operating cash flow has remained positive and covered reported capital spending throughout the available quarterly series. The latest period combined stronger cash generation with a pronounced increase in capital investment, leaving project returns and spending discipline central to future cash conversion.
Debt is substantial, while cash and short-term investments are modest and have stayed within a narrow range. Most of the broader cash-and-investments total sits in long-term investments whose classification is unspecified, so it should not be treated as readily available liquidity; weak short-term coverage ratios reinforce that distinction.
The balance sheet can support an infrastructure model backed by recurring cash generation, but it leaves less tolerance for poorly returning projects, refinancing pressure, or an operating setback. The quality screen is comparatively supportive while the distress screen remains cautionary, a combination consistent with a profitable company carrying meaningful financial obligations.
Data-derived red flags
- Financial-distress signal — its Altman Z-Score of 1.27 sits in the distress zone (elevated bankruptcy risk).
- Inconsistent delivery — missed Wall Street EPS estimates in 3 of the last 8 reported quarters.
- Rich valuation — a P/E of 19.92 runs well above the Energy sector’s ~14.90x, leaving little room for a miss.

What should you watch next at Kinder Morgan (KMI)?
Short answer · as of
The next earnings report is expected on Oct 28, 2026.
Research dated 2026-09-12.
Watch whether revenue and operating profit resume their advance after the latest sequential easing, and whether reported earnings continue to clear expectations. The scheduled earnings release offers the next direct check, while longer-range estimates imply that the market expects continuing revenue and earnings growth.
Capital allocation deserves equal attention. Operating cash flow must continue to outrun capital spending as management advances potential midstream projects, and new commitments are more persuasive when they arrive with the long-term contracts and creditworthy customers management has emphasized.
Recent filings show active corporate reporting around operating results, financing agreements, and other events. Material project approvals, funding choices, or changes in debt should be assessed together rather than as isolated announcements.

How does Kinder Morgan compare with its peers?
Short answer
Kinder Morgan's score ranks 6th of 6 in the bounded comparison shown, against 5 same-model peers. These are company scores, not expected investment returns. The set lists named competitors first, then companies in the same data-provider industry classification closest in market value; that classification is the provider's, not our judgment of business similarity.
Research dated 2026-09-12.
Kinder Morgan differs from a narrowly focused pipeline operator because its portfolio combines natural gas transportation and storage with refined-products and crude pipelines, commodity terminals, tankers, carbon dioxide marketing, and selected oil-field and gas-processing interests. Natural gas remains the economic center, but the surrounding businesses broaden the drivers of revenue and capital demand.
That mix makes segment composition especially important. A change in consolidated revenue can reflect natural gas activity, liquids movement, terminal handling, or the more commodity-exposed carbon dioxide operations, so the total alone does not reveal which part of the network strengthened.

Kinder Morgan Energy Stock: Key Questions Answered
Research dated 2026-09-12; the answers below are from that research, and the full attribution is under Sources. The last 3 questions are answered from this page's own dated data, not from the research.
Why do Kinder Morgan’s natural gas pipelines matter more than its other segments?
Natural gas pipelines generate most of Kinder Morgan’s segment revenue and include transportation, storage, gathering, processing, treatment, and liquefaction infrastructure. Their scale makes utilization and contract-backed expansion especially influential for companywide results.
Does Kinder Morgan mainly produce energy commodities or move and store them?
Transportation, storage, processing, and terminal handling define most of the business. Production exposure exists within the carbon dioxide segment through oil-field interests and related facilities, so Kinder Morgan is broader than a pure transportation network without being primarily a producer.
Can Kinder Morgan fund pipeline expansion from operating cash flow?
Reported operating cash flow has exceeded capital spending throughout the available quarterly series, including the latest period. The margin of coverage still matters because capital spending has risen and management expects additional project commitments.
What do Kinder Morgan’s terminals add beyond its pipeline network?
The terminals store and handle refined fuels, chemicals, ethanol, metals, petroleum coke, and other commodities, while the segment also includes tankers. This adds handling and storage activity whose economics need not move in step with natural gas pipeline operations.
