Research dated 2026-09-13: NOV sells the machinery, tools, consumables and support that drilling and production operators use from the rig floor through well completion and offshore production. Its latest profit rebound will matter more if working-capital release restores cash generation while maturing equipment projects are replaced by drilling, aftermarket and products-and-services demand.

For the third quarter, we expect Energy Equipment segment revenue to be between 1% to 3% lower year over year as growth in our drilling, capital equipment and aftermarket businesses offset by certain projects nearing completion during the second quarter.

For the third quarter, we expect Energy Products and Services segment revenue to increase between 5% to 7% year over year with EBITDA in the range of $130 million to $150 million With that, I will turn the call back to Jose.

What is NOV (NOV), and what does it report?
Short answer · as of
Calling NOV an oilfield-services company suggests a business paid mainly for field labor.
Research dated 2026-09-13.
Calling NOV an oilfield-services company suggests a business paid mainly for field labor. Manufactured products are actually its largest reported sales stream, complemented by service and rental revenue.
The portfolio spans drilling automation, pipe and downhole tools, completion equipment, artificial lift, floating production systems, rig machinery and offshore construction equipment. Spare parts, repairs, monitoring, field support and training extend the relationship beyond the original equipment sale, making results sensitive to equipment deliveries, project timing, utilization and aftermarket demand rather than commodity output alone.
What do the latest results show for NOV (NOV)?
Short answer · as of
The most recent reported quarter, Q2 FY2026, carried revenue of $2.13B.
Research dated 2026-09-13.
The latest reported period reversed the preceding deterioration: sales recovered from their recent trough, while gross profit, operating profit and net income expanded much faster. Reported revenue and earnings also cleared market estimates after a run of uneven earnings outcomes, although the rebound follows an annual period in which modestly lower sales accompanied a much steeper contraction in net income.
That is the reported change. Looking ahead, management expects Energy Equipment revenue to soften as projects nearing completion outweigh growth in drilling, capital equipment and aftermarket activities, while Energy Products and Services is expected to grow under an operating environment similar to the latest period.

What are the financial strengths and risks for NOV (NOV)?
Short answer
Cash and short-term investments were $1.16B at the Jun 30, 2026 balance-sheet date. Operating cash flow was $17.00M for the quarter ended Jun 30, 2026, meaning operations generated cash. These figures do not establish a cash runway.
Research dated 2026-09-13.
Liquidity is ample relative to near-term obligations, but NOV is not in a net-cash position: debt materially exceeds cash and short-term investments even after including longer-term investments. The cash balance has also retreated across the latest reported periods from its year-end peak.
The sharper concern is conversion. Operating cash flow was weak as accounting profit recovered and did not cover capital spending across the recent reporting stretch; trailing margins and returns remain thin as well. Management expects working capital to support cash generation later in the year, making that release important to funding investment and the continuing dividend without drawing further on liquidity.
Data-derived red flags
- Inconsistent delivery — missed Wall Street EPS estimates in 6 of the last 8 reported quarters.
- Rich valuation — a P/E of 72.31 runs well above the Energy sector’s ~14.90x, leaving little room for a miss.

What should you watch next at NOV (NOV)?
Short answer · as of
The next earnings report is expected on Oct 26, 2026.
Research dated 2026-09-13.
Energy Equipment needs replacement work as projects finish. Watch whether drilling, capital equipment and aftermarket gains can narrow the expected decline, and whether Energy Products and Services delivers the growth management described without a change in operating conditions.
Profit alone is not enough. The more demanding confirmation would be operating cash covering capital expenditure as working capital reverses from a drag into a source of cash, with the cash balance stabilizing rather than continuing its recent decline. The scheduled earnings release will also test whether the latest estimate beat began a steadier earnings pattern; longer-range analyst averages assume revenue and earnings continue rising.
What management is planning
Management expectations, not completed milestones or guarantees. Selected verbatim excerpts; dates follow the transcript provider.
For the third quarter, we expect Energy Equipment segment revenue to be between 1% to 3% lower year over year as growth in our drilling, capital equipment and aftermarket businesses offset by certain projects nearing completion during the second quarter.

Rodney Reed ·
For the third quarter, our guidance assumes that the operating environment remains consistent with the conditions during the second quarter.
Rodney Reed ·
We expect working capital to benefit cash generation during the second half of the year, consistent with trends experienced in both 2024 and 2025 and we still anticipate converting between 40% to 50% of 2026 EBITDA to free cash flow. We continue to expect capital expenditures to be between $340 million and $370 million and our annual effective tax rate to be between 34% to 36%.

How does NOV compare with its peers?
Short answer
NOV's score ranks 9th of 13 in the bounded comparison shown, against 12 same-model peers. These are company scores, not expected investment returns. The set lists named competitors first, then companies in the same data-provider industry classification closest in market value; that classification is the provider's, not our judgment of business similarity.
Research dated 2026-09-13.
Unlike a contractor paid mainly for crews in the field, NOV derives most of its reported revenue from manufactured products. Unlike a narrow component supplier, it reaches across rig infrastructure, wellbore tools, completion systems, production equipment, offshore construction machinery and the support required after delivery.
That breadth ties NOV to several customer spending pools, but it does not eliminate cyclicality. Large equipment projects can create delivery and completion swings, while service, rental, spare-parts and repair activity provide different demand rhythms; management’s outlook already shows those forces moving in different directions within the portfolio.

What has been published about NOV (NOV)?
What Investors Ask About NOV (NOV) — Energy
Research dated 2026-09-13; the answers below are from that research, and the full attribution is under Sources. The last 3 questions are answered from this page's own dated data, not from the research.
Does NOV produce oil and gas or sell the equipment used to do it?
NOV supplies the systems, components and support used by drilling and production operators. Its exposure comes through customer spending on rigs, wells, completions, production infrastructure and aftermarket needs, rather than through selling hydrocarbons from its own reserves.
Why can NOV’s Energy Equipment revenue fall while drilling and aftermarket activity grows?
Large equipment projects create uneven delivery schedules. Management expects projects nearing completion to outweigh growth in drilling, capital equipment and aftermarket businesses, so improving activity within parts of the segment may not prevent an overall decline.
Why did NOV’s latest profit rebound not produce strong free cash flow?
The income statement improved sharply, but operating cash remained below capital spending in the latest reported period. Management expects working capital to aid cash generation later in the year, so the cash-flow recovery still depends on balance-sheet movements catching up with reported profit.
How important are products versus service and rental revenue at NOV?
Products dominate NOV’s reported sales mix, while service contributes a meaningful stream and rental is smaller. That makes equipment demand and project timing especially important, with service, repairs, monitoring, field support and rentals broadening revenue beyond the original sale.
