Westlake Corporation · WLK · NYSE · Basic Materials · Chemicals - Specialty
Research dated 2026-09-13: Westlake Corporation spans commodity-linked materials and finished products used in housing and infrastructure, so it is broader than a specialty-chemicals producer. The defining question is whether that manufacturing breadth can translate positive operating profitability into durable net earnings.

What is Westlake (WLK), and what does it report?
Short answer · as of
Westlake makes ethylene, polyethylene, chlor-alkali, vinyl intermediates, polyvinyl chloride and epoxy materials, then extends further into siding, trim, windows, roofing, decking, pipes and fittings.
Research dated 2026-09-13.
Westlake makes ethylene, polyethylene, chlor-alkali, vinyl intermediates, polyvinyl chloride and epoxy materials, then extends further into siding, trim, windows, roofing, decking, pipes and fittings. Its sales therefore measure demand across chemical processing, packaging, healthcare, automotive, water systems and construction rather than exposure to a single chemical market.
The reporting structure follows that industrial chain: performance and essential materials sit alongside housing and infrastructure products. Chemical processors and plastics fabricators buy materials, while contractors, municipalities and supply warehouses buy products closer to installation and end use.
What do the latest results show for Westlake (WLK)?
Short answer · as of
The most recent reported quarter, Q2 FY2026, carried revenue of $3.27B.
Research dated 2026-09-13.
The latest profitability measures pull in different directions. Gross and operating margins remain positive, yet the net margin and return on equity are negative, showing that operating profitability is not reaching shareholders as net earnings.
Product demand supplies the operating mechanism. Packaging, healthcare, automotive and industrial activity influence materials volumes, while construction, municipal projects and water infrastructure influence finished-product demand; weakness across these markets can pressure plant utilization and margin conversion.

What are the financial strengths and risks for Westlake (WLK)?
Short answer
Cash and short-term investments were $1.85B at the Jun 30, 2026 balance-sheet date. Operating cash flow was $318.00M for the quarter ended Jun 30, 2026, meaning operations generated cash. These figures do not establish a cash runway.
Research dated 2026-09-13.
Near-term financial coverage is the clearest strength: current and quick ratios indicate resources above short-term obligations. Debt relative to equity is meaningful without dominating the capital structure.
The sharper risk lies in earnings conversion. Positive operating profitability alongside a negative net margin and negative return on equity leaves little room for pressure from weaker volumes, pricing or utilization across Westlake’s manufacturing network.
Data-derived red flags
- Financial-distress signal — its Altman Z-Score of 1.67 sits in the distress zone (elevated bankruptcy risk).
- Negative return on equity (-13.9%) — the business is not currently generating profit on shareholder capital.
- Inconsistent delivery — missed Wall Street EPS estimates in 6 of the last 8 reported quarters.

What should you watch next at Westlake (WLK)?
Short answer · as of
The next earnings report is expected on Oct 29, 2026.
Research dated 2026-09-13.
Follow the passage from gross profit through operating profit to net income. Improvement requires operating profitability to survive the remaining expense burden rather than disappearing before the bottom line.
Within the business, watch construction demand for siding, windows, roofing, decking and pipe alongside industrial demand for polyethylene, chlor-alkali, vinyl and epoxy products. Broad improvement would support the value of Westlake’s product range; weakness across those end markets would expose the cost of carrying an extensive manufacturing footprint.

How does Westlake compare with its peers?
Short answer
Westlake's score ranks 13th of 13 in the bounded comparison shown, against 12 same-model peers. These are company scores, not expected investment returns. The set lists named competitors first, then companies in the same data-provider industry classification closest in market value; that classification is the provider's, not our judgment of business similarity.
Research dated 2026-09-13.
Westlake sits between a commodity chemical producer and a building-products manufacturer. It sells foundational molecules and resins, but also converts related materials into products used in homes, municipal systems and industrial installations.
That reach creates exposure to more end markets than a narrowly focused chemical company, while retaining greater upstream materials exposure than a typical housing-products peer. The distinction is operational breadth, not insulation from chemical or construction cycles.

WLK Basic Materials Stock FAQ
Research dated 2026-09-13; the answers below are from that research, and the full attribution is under Sources. The last 3 questions are answered from this page's own dated data, not from the research.
How do Westlake’s vinyl materials connect with its housing and infrastructure products?
Westlake produces vinyl intermediates and polyvinyl chloride, while its housing and infrastructure segment sells products such as siding, trim, decking, pipe and fittings. The company therefore participates across related stages of the vinyl chain.

Who buys Westlake’s chlor-alkali and polyethylene products?
Chemical processors and plastics fabricators are core customers, with the resulting materials serving packaging, automotive, healthcare, water treatment, coatings and other industrial uses.
Which end markets use Westlake’s polyvinyl chloride compounds?
Westlake’s compounds serve housing, medical and automotive applications, while related pipe and fitting products address water, sewer, electrical and industrial systems.

Known dates and sources are recorded on their own rows; an em dash or UNRECORDED tier preserves a stored observation without inventing either. The quarterly income statement is provider-standardized (FMP) under one row, and scale definitions — a 0-100 rating, the band ladder, the Piotroski 0–9 range — are fixed rather than measured.
