Research dated 2026-09-13: Commerce Bancshares is the parent of Commerce Bank, combining consumer and commercial banking with payments, treasury services, trust administration, investment management and private banking. That breadth makes it more than a branch lender: customer activity can generate lending income alongside card, cash-management and wealth fees. Commerce Bank must now show that expense discipline can keep lifting profit even when reported revenue and liquid assets move unevenly.

What is Commerce Bancshares (CBSH), and what does it report?
Short answer · as of
Consumer results reflect deposits, mortgages, cards and specialized personal financing, while commercial activity spans corporate credit, equipment leasing, merchant services, commercial cards, cash management and fixed-income distribution.
Research dated 2026-09-13.
Consumer results reflect deposits, mortgages, cards and specialized personal financing, while commercial activity spans corporate credit, equipment leasing, merchant services, commercial cards, cash management and fixed-income distribution. Wealth Management adds trust, estate, advisory, brokerage and private-banking relationships. The unit of demand therefore varies by franchise: borrowing, payments, managed assets and fiduciary relationships all matter.
Reported company revenue and profit blend these activities rather than presenting Commerce as a pure lending operation. The available segment disclosure captures commission income and managed-account services, but the broader business description shows that those lines represent only part of the operating mix.
What do the latest results show for Commerce Bancshares (CBSH)?
Short answer · as of
The most recent reported quarter, Q2 FY2026, carried revenue of $499M.
Research dated 2026-09-13.
The latest period brought lower revenue and gross profit than the preceding period, yet operating profit and net income increased as selling and administrative expense fell sharply. That combination points to expense leverage rather than broad top-line acceleration as the immediate earnings mechanism.
The earnings release also came in above consensus for revenue and per-share profit. Across the longer annual series, revenue and net income have risen lately, while the release history shows recurring per-share profit outperformance despite occasional revenue softness.

What are the financial strengths and risks for Commerce Bancshares (CBSH)?
Short answer · as of
The MoonshotScore pillars rate business quality, an attractive price as strengths.
Research dated 2026-09-13.
Cash and short-term investments exceed stated debt, providing a substantial liquidity cushion. They do not eliminate balance-sheet risk: total liabilities remain far larger, and liquid assets have declined from earlier peaks while moving considerably between reporting periods.
Operating cash flow remains positive in the latest period and capital spending is modest relative to it, but cash generation has been volatile. Because Commerce extends consumer, mortgage and corporate credit, weaker borrower repayment or less profitable loan demand would reach earnings through the lending book, while softer payments or managed-asset activity would pressure fee-producing franchises.
What does the cash-flow statement report?

What should you watch next at Commerce Bancshares (CBSH)?
Short answer · as of
The next earnings report is expected on Oct 20, 2026.
Research dated 2026-09-13.
Watch whether revenue stabilizes while operating profit remains above its recent range. If expenses rebound without matching revenue improvement, the latest profit expansion would look less durable; continued per-share profit outperformance with firmer revenue would strengthen the operating case.
Liquidity deserves a separate check. The next balance sheet should reveal whether the decline in cash and short-term investments continues, while operating cash flow will show whether the latest positive generation persists after unusually large prior movement.
The scheduled earnings release also provides a clean comparison with current revenue and profit expectations. The useful observation is not merely a beat or miss, but whether lending, payments, cash management and wealth activity collectively support the reported result.
How does Commerce Bancshares compare with its peers?
Short answer
Commerce Bancshares's score ranks 13th of 13 in the bounded comparison shown, against 12 same-model peers. These are company scores, not expected investment returns. The set lists named competitors first, then companies in the same data-provider industry classification closest in market value; that classification is the provider's, not our judgment of business similarity.
Research dated 2026-09-13.
Commerce differs from a narrowly focused regional lender through the range of customer activity housed inside Commerce Bank. Branch-based consumer relationships sit beside corporate cash management, merchant and commercial cards, equipment leasing, fixed-income distribution, trust administration and discretionary portfolio management.
Its physical franchise is concentrated across Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Oklahoma and Colorado, while the product set reaches individuals, businesses, institutions and public entities. Compared with a bank driven mainly by loan demand, Commerce has more fee-producing touchpoints, though those businesses introduce exposure to transaction activity and managed-asset engagement.

Common Questions About CBSH (Financial Services)
Research dated 2026-09-13; the answers below are from that research, and the full attribution is under Sources. The last 2 questions are answered from this page's own dated data, not from the research.
What does Commerce Bank sell beyond branch banking?
Commerce Bank sells corporate cash management, merchant and commercial card services, equipment leasing, fixed-income distribution, trust administration, portfolio management, brokerage and private banking. These activities broaden the revenue mechanism beyond deposits and loans.
Why do Commerce Bank commercial cards and cash management matter?
They tie revenue to business payment flows and treasury activity rather than only to borrowing. That gives the commercial franchise another route to monetize established corporate and institutional relationships.
How does Commerce Bank Wealth Management change the business mix?
Wealth Management adds trust, estate, advisory, discretionary investment, brokerage and private-banking relationships. Its demand depends on client assets and engagement, creating a different earnings mechanism from consumer or corporate lending.
Has Commerce Bancshares kept its dividend payment unchanged?
Recent declared distributions show an unchanged per-share payment, including the scheduled payout. The trailing distribution record therefore reflects continuity rather than a recent increase.

The 73 rows below are exactly the facts the evidence-backed sections of this page printed — the 10-second verdict, the MoonshotScore, price and market value, the five questions with their receipts, and the records behind this page. Known dates and sources are recorded on their own rows; an em dash or UNRECORDED tier preserves a stored observation without inventing either. The quarterly income statement is provider-standardized (FMP) under one row, and scale definitions — a 0-100 rating, the band ladder, the Piotroski 0–9 range — are fixed rather than measured. No number in those sections was generated by a model. The register does not cover quoted third-party headlines, the dated council readings, or the Frequently Asked Questions; each of those says where it came from where it stands.
"As of" is the date the value is true for where the source carries one — a quarter end, a filing date, a price close, the day the score was computed. A cached observation with no source date remains undated; the page publication date is not used as a substitute.
