Research dated 2026-09-13: Valley National Bancorp is the holding company behind Valley National Bank, combining commercial and consumer lending with deposits, investment management, trusts, insurance and transaction services. Its economics depend on the spread and fees earned across those relationships after funding costs, credit losses and operating expenses. Recent profit improvement is meaningful only if Valley can preserve credit quality while turning revenue growth and expense control into steadier cash generation.

1 · What is it?

What is Valley National Bancorp (VLY), and what does it report?

Short answer · as of

Valley gathers deposits and deploys capital across commercial, industrial, real estate, automobile and consumer loans.

Research dated 2026-09-13.

Valley gathers deposits and deploys capital across commercial, industrial, real estate, automobile and consumer loans. It also earns fees from investment management, trust administration, insurance, foreign exchange, letters of credit and equipment finance, so reported revenue measures much more than lending volume.

Commercial Lending, Consumer Lending and Investment Management form the operating structure. Deposit-account and advisory revenue disclosures reinforce that Valley is a relationship bank with lending, funding and fee services under the same roof; net income then reflects funding costs, credit provisions and the expense base required to deliver them.

2 · Latest results

What do the latest results show for Valley National Bancorp (VLY)?

Short answer · as of

The most recent reported quarter, Q2 FY2026, carried revenue of $326M.

Research dated 2026-09-13.

The latest earnings release showed revenue advancing again and exceeding expectations, while per-share earnings landed just below the estimate after a run of favorable surprises. The broader quarterly statement still showed net income and diluted earnings improving from the preceding period, extending the recovery visible across the recent series.

Annual revenue had softened even as annual net income rebounded sharply, indicating that profitability improved faster than the top line. Management attributes the prospective efficiency gains to further revenue growth and operating-expense control, while maintaining its prior expectations for charge-offs and provisions.

Operating cash flow remained positive in the latest period but eased from the preceding period. That keeps the quality of the earnings recovery in focus: accounting profit has strengthened, while cash conversion has not followed a smooth path.

3 · Financial strengths and risks

What are the financial strengths and risks for Valley National Bancorp (VLY)?

Short answer · as of

The MoonshotScore pillars rate an attractive price as strengths.

Research dated 2026-09-13.

Valley ended the latest reported period with a sharp increase in cash and short-term investments, alongside a much larger pool of long-term investments and debt below the short-term liquidity balance. The long-term investment classification is unclassified, making asset composition and accessibility more informative than the aggregate cash-and-investment total alone.

Cash generation is a strength when judged from the latest positive periods, but its history is volatile and includes negative readings. Conventional current and quick ratios also offer limited insight for a deposit-funded bank; credit performance, funding stability and the liquidity of securities matter more.

Commercial, industrial and real estate lending expose Valley to borrower stress and collateral weakness. Rising charge-offs or provisions could absorb the benefit of higher revenue, while stubborn operating costs could interrupt the efficiency improvement management expects.

4 · What to check next?

What should you watch next at Valley National Bancorp (VLY)?

Short answer · as of

The next earnings report is expected on Oct 22, 2026.

Research dated 2026-09-13.

The upcoming earnings release needs to be read across revenue, per-share earnings and credit costs together. Revenue has recently exceeded expectations more consistently than earnings, while analyst estimates assume continued expansion beyond the near-term report.

Watch whether the efficiency ratio improves through the combination management named: revenue growth paired with expense control. Stable charge-offs and provisions would support that path; deterioration would show that credit costs are consuming the operating gains.

The enlarged cash and short-term investment balance also deserves confirmation in the next periodic filing. Its persistence, composition and relationship to the long-term investment portfolio will determine whether the latest balance represents durable liquidity or a period-end allocation change.

5 · Peer comparison

How does Valley National Bancorp compare with its peers?

Short answer

Valley National Bancorp's score ranks 13th of 13 in the bounded comparison shown, against 12 same-model peers. These are company scores, not expected investment returns. The set lists named competitors first, then companies in the same data-provider industry classification closest in market value; that classification is the provider's, not our judgment of business similarity.

Research dated 2026-09-13.

Valley is broader than a regional lender centered solely on branch deposits and mortgages. Commercial and consumer credit sit beside investment management, trust and estate administration, insurance, international transaction services, healthcare equipment lending and commercial leasing.

That breadth creates fee relationships beyond the lending spread, but it also makes the revenue mix harder to judge from loan growth alone. Deposit-account and advisory service revenue offer partial markers for the non-lending contribution, while returns on assets and equity show that balance-sheet productivity remains central despite the wider service menu.

The shares trade close to reported book value, so comparison with similar banks should emphasize the durability of book value, credit costs and returns rather than treating the service breadth as sufficient evidence of superior economics.

What Investors Ask About Valley National Bancorp (VLY) — Financial Services

Research dated 2026-09-13; the answers below are from that research, and the full attribution is under Sources. The last 3 questions are answered from this page's own dated data, not from the research.

Why are charge-offs and provisions important for Valley National Bank’s commercial and real estate lending mix?

Credit losses determine how much income survives after Valley earns lending spreads and fees. Management expects charge-offs and provisions to remain aligned with prior guidance, making any departure a direct test of the profit recovery.

Sources (as of 2026-09-13): Business description; Management outlook — dated call excerpts; Quarterly income statement (USD thousands)

What do Valley National Bank’s letters of credit and foreign exchange services add to the business?

They extend commercial relationships beyond loans into payments, trade support and transaction accounts for international clients. That creates fee-bearing touchpoints that can deepen a customer relationship without relying solely on additional credit demand.

Sources (as of 2026-09-13): Business description; Revenue by segment

Does Valley National Bancorp’s cash surge mean liquidity risk has disappeared?

The surge improves the reported short-term liquidity position, but much of the broader cash-and-investment total remains in long-term investments with an unclassified designation. Persistence and asset composition matter before treating the change as durable.

Sources (as of 2026-09-13): Cash, investments and debt; Cash and investment components; Cash and short-term investments over time (USD millions); Most recent periodic reports

Can Valley National Bancorp’s recent cash generation support its unchanged distribution?

The per-share distribution has remained unchanged and the scheduled payment matches the recent pattern. Operating cash flow has recovered into positive territory but has varied sharply, so continued coverage depends on steadier cash generation rather than payment history alone.

Sources (as of 2026-09-13): Next scheduled dividend; Recent dividends paid; Dividends per share, last 12 months (split-adjusted); Operating cash flow by quarter (USD millions)

The analyst consensus price target for Valley National Bancorp (VLY) is $16.50 (range $15.50 to $17.00, median $16.50), per FMP data captured Oct 4, 2026. Targets are analyst opinions and change often; they are not a Stock Expert AI forecast.

Does VLY pay a dividend?

Yes. Valley National Bancorp (VLY) shows a trailing 12-month dividend yield of 3.43%, as of Oct 2, 2026, in the data on this page. Payout ratio and cash-flow coverage decide whether it can last, and past dividends do not guarantee future payments.
