What Are Stock Market Industries?

Sectors and industries subdivide the stock market so investors can compare companies that share business models, revenue drivers and competitive dynamics. We publish the familiar sector names; the classification behind them is our data provider's rather than GICS, corrected where the two genuinely disagree.

Stock Expert AI currently tracks 238 industries spanning 35,860 publicly traded stocks across all 11 sectors. The largest industry by company count is Asset Management with 8,094 stocks, while the most specialized is Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) with 3 stocks.

Each industry page on Stock Expert AI includes AI-powered MoonshotScore ratings, daily top gainers and decliners, market-capitalization distribution charts, and a complete stock table.

Use the table of contents above to jump directly to a specific sector group, review the largest industries by stock count, or read the FAQ and methodology sections for a deeper understanding of how our coverage is structured and scored.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many stock market industries does Stock Expert AI cover?

Stock Expert AI covers 238 industries across all 11 sectors. Together these industries span 35,860 publicly traded U.S. stocks, led by Asset Management with 8,094 companies.

What is the difference between sectors and industries in stock analysis?

Sectors are broad market categories (like Technology or Healthcare) while industries are more specific sub-groups within sectors (like Semiconductors or Biotechnology).

How can I use industry analysis for stock picking?

Industry analysis helps you identify which segments of the economy are growing fastest, find top-performing companies within specific niches, and compare stocks against their direct peers.

What is a MoonshotScore and how is it calculated?

The MoonshotScore is Stock Expert AI's proprietary 0-to-100 rating. V2 is the only current model: eligible companies are scored against their sector peers across five pillars — business quality, financial safety, valuation, growth durability, and momentum. MoonshotScore V2 covers eligible common stocks and ADRs on NASDAQ, NYSE and AMEX. OTC listings are outside the scheduled universe; funds, ETFs, warrants, units, SPACs, preferreds, and notes carry no MoonshotScore.

How often is industry data updated?

Industry data including stock prices, market capitalizations, and MoonshotScores is updated throughout each trading day. Each of the 238 industry pages re-ranks its stock table from that same refresh, so the rankings always reflect the latest scored data.

Our Analysis Methodology

Stock Expert AI rates eligible U.S.-listed companies with the MoonshotScore, a proprietary 0–100 composite rating.

MoonshotScore V2 rates eligible US-listed companies from 0 to 100 against their sector peers on five pillars: Business Quality (weight 26), Financial Safety (weight 20), Valuation (weight 18), Growth Durability (weight 16) and Momentum (weight 12). It reads no news-sentiment or analyst data, and it is not a probability of future returns.

Figures come from Financial Modeling Prep (FMP). If FMP has no figure for a ticker, a price or fundamental may come from a Yahoo Finance fallback, or a price from an Alpaca fallback. SEC EDGAR is used only for filing links and company identity details (legal name, address), never for figures. Each price is the last quote we recorded, shown with the trading session it belongs to. Pages are served from a cache, so the copy you are reading can lag that quote. Each quote is a provider snapshot, not an exchange feed.

Sector names are the familiar eleven, but the classification itself is our data provider's, not GICS, and departs from it in places — mortgage REITs, education and packaging are filed the way GICS files them; the rest follow the provider. Companies are assigned to one sector and to one of 50+ industries by their primary revenue source.
